Apple Approves Skyfire Browser That Can Play Flash Video

Apple has approved the Skyfire mobile browser which is capable of playing Flash video. It will be available in the App Store soon.

According to CNNMoney, Skyfire will be available for download at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday for $2.99.

To get around Apple's restriction, Skyfire came up with an innovative solution: When users click on a page that contains Flash video, Skyfire's servers download, render and translate the video into HTML5, which is a Web standard that iOS devices support. Skyfire then displays a thumbnail that users can click on to stream the video from its servers. "We will attack those pesky blue Flash error messages," said Jeffrey Glueck, Skyfire's CEO.

You can learn more about the browser here.

Greenpois0n Adds iPod Touch 2G Support

With the release of RC4 of Greenpois0n, the jailbreak tool now adds support for the iPod Touch 2G, both MC and MB models both of which are untethered jailbreaks.

pod2g tweeted earlier about his second exploit, which he calls “steaks4uce”, which exists for the iPod Touch 2G. Using this method alongside Greenpois0n, and using Comex's tether hack, greenpois0n adds the iPod Touch 2G to it's list.

Both Windows and Mac versions are available via the greenpois0n website.

iOS 4.1 Jailbreak Arrives, But Do You Want It?

Almost a month ago to the day, I reported that hackers had found a way to jailbreak iOS 4.1--and asked if it was worth the hassle anymore. That question generated lots of great discussion, and now is the perfect time to revisit it.

That's because an iOS 4.1 jailbreak, Limera1n, is now in the wild. Unlike the JailbreakMe hack that made jailbreaking iOS 4.0 as simple as loading a URL in your iPhone's browser, Limera1n requires a PC and a download--one that's currently available for Windows only.

To use the hack, start by connecting your iPhone (3G, 3GS, or 4), iPod Touch 4G, or iPad. (Note that I used my iPhone 3GS, so I can't promise the results will be the same with other devices.) Let iTunes do its thing, just to make sure you have a full and working backup.

Warning: proceed at your own risk!

Run the Limera1n executable, then click "make it ra1n." In a moment the program will instruct you to hold down the Home and Power buttons. Do that for a few seconds, then look for it to say "release power button." Do that, but make sure to keep holding the Home button until you see the message, "in DFU mode...wait."

In less than a minute you should see a "Done" message, after which your iPhone/iPod/iPad will turn itself off. Hold down the Power button to fire it back up.

All this worked smoothly for me (though a handful of my Camera Roll thumbnails got blacked out for some reason), and afterward I found a Limera1n icon on my iPhone.

Tapping it led me to a screen where I could download jailbreak-app store Cydia--though I had to reboot my 3GS before the Cydia icon would appear.

So, now, let's get back to the big question: is jailbreaking still worth the effort? Are there enough must-have apps, and, if so, what are they? (Check out 5 killer apps for jailbroken iPhones if you're looking for some.)

Personally, I'm still enamored with tethering solutions like MyWi 4.0 and PdaNet, though I must admit I don't use either one very much. Other than that, I can easily live without jailbreaking.

How about you?

On September 22nd, a new service and app was added the iTunes App Store without much notice. A company called MediaFriends has created Hey Wire, a service which allows anyone with an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac or PC to send text messages to people around the world for free. HeyWire is the first and currently only multi-platform texting and chat service that delivers free international messaging with a real phone number.

Not only does HeyWire give you a real number, the service also enables users to text eachother worldwide, anywhere, and even supports all major languages, thus allowing people to communicate in their native language.

The App is available in the Apple App Store and the Web PC/Mac Beta versions can be found at HeyWire.com. HeyWire will soon be available for Android, GoogleTV, gaming devices and e-Readers in 2011.

Google Docs Coming To iPad, Android

Owners of iPads and Android devices looking to be a little more productive may be in luck.

Google plans "in the next few weeks" to offer its Docs productivity suite for Apple's iPad tablet and for devices with Google's Android OS, the company announced at its Google Atmosphere event in Paris yesterday.

Google didn't say which Android-based devices will work with Google Docs. The company did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Google's decision to bring its productivity suite to the iPad could be the most important aspect of its announcement. Currently, Apple sells its iWork suite, which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, to iPad customers for $10 per application. If Google offers Docs for free, it might make some wonder why they should opt for Apple's alternative.

Google's Web-based Docs suite allows people to create and share items such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and forms.

Microsoft Updates Live Messenger iPhone App

Microsoft has beefed up its Windows Live Messenger iPhone app with a few new features.

Launched on Monday, Live Messenger 1.1 now lets you incorporate your Facebook account directly into Messenger. You can view updates from and chat with your Facebook friends and update your own profile. Through your Windows Live Service account page, Microsoft gives you some control over the Facebook integration, so you can limit who sees what.

Also new to Live Messenger is a filter for your friends list. You can choose to view all your friends, only those in certain groups, or only those currently online, a handy option for those of you with lengthy contact lists. You also now have easier access to your status screen, so you can more quickly change your status or sign out completely.

Live Messenger 1.1 takes advantage of the fast switching feature introduced in Apple's iOS 4, which means you can pause the app to do something else and then quickly return to it without having to launch it from scratch. To reach out to more of the world, the app also now supports 31 different languages, including Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Turkish.

The 1.1 update represents the first refinements that Microsoft has made to Live Messenger for the iPhone since the app's debut in June. The Facebook integration new to the mobile version also gives us a taste of what to expect with the upcoming Live Messenger 2011 desktop version. Currently in beta, the new desktop edition will offer Facebook chatting among a host of other enhancements.

iOS 4.1 For iPhone, iPod Touch Released

The latest software for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available starting Wednesday for download from Apple.

The company foreshadowed the arrival of iOS 4.1 at its annual fall press event last week and included an overview of the latest features. The download is free via iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch owners.

Besides upgrades to new features for games, photos, and high-definition videos, Apple is using this software update to zap several bugs at once.

Among the issues Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised would be fixed with the installation of 4.1 are: proximity sensor problems that were causing some accidental dropped calls; the painfully slow performance of the iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0; Bluetooth connectivity problems with certain car stereos and headsets (that CNET noted as soon as the iPhone 4 was released); and problems related to the Nike+iPod software.

Other upgrades in iOS 4.1 include: the ability to upload HD videos over Wi-Fi, TV show rentals on iTunes from an iPhone or iPod Touch, new HDR (high dynamic range) photo function, and the delayed GameCenter.

GameCenter was announced in April at the iOS 4.0 press event, but was not included in the initial release of the software. GameCenter is a social-networking feature that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to play games on their devices against friends in real time.

CNET's Kent German will have a hands-on review of the latest software for iPhone and iPod Touch as well as screenshots later today, so be sure to check back.

Plex For iPhone & iPad Coming Soon

For a long time now, Mac OS X has had many media center replacements to choose from that are far more robust that Apple’s Front Row. Now it seems that Plex Media Center is poised to take the lead in this very competitive arena.

Plex Media Center 9 is due for imminent release and with it comes a new app for iPhone and iPad. This mobile version of Plex will allow seamless integration between the iApp and desktop version. You will be able to start watching a show on your PC and pick up right where you left off on your iPhone or iPad. All of your viewing information will be synced up perfectly.

Plex mobile app will turn your iPhone into a full-featured remote. This means that you will be able to use your phone to control Plex on your PC via your iPhone anywhere in your house. Play media where you want, when you want, with one app, your iPhone, and your PC!

If the rumors of a new version of Apple TV are true, then this new version of Plex for Mac with iOS integration will be welcome for those looking to cut off the cable companies permanently, once and for all. I look forward to that myself.

Apple's iPod, iTunes Event September 1

That Apple September music event? It's happening earlier than anyone expected this year.

Apple sent an invitation moments ago inviting us to the event next Wednesday, September 1. It'll take place at the usual spot, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, at the usual time, 10 a.m. PDT.

We'll be there live-blogging the proceedings, so be sure to come back here a week from today.

What exactly will Apple announce? Well, it's a tradition for the company to release new iPod hardware in September. This year, it's widely expected Apple will add the "Retina" display and front-facing camera of the iPhone 4 to the iPod Touch. There's also been speculation about changes coming to Apple TV, including a scaled-down device, a much lower price tag of $99, and access to the App Store.
On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that Apple would be introducing 99-cent TV show rentals at this event, but said that event would take place September 7.

Apple Releases iOS Patch To Fix PDF Security Flaw

Apple has quickly released a patch for the recently uncovered security flaw with how Mobile Safari handles PDF files in iOS 4.0.1 and earlier for the iPod Touch and iPhone, and iOS 3.2.1 and earlier for the iPad.

The iPhone Dev Team uncovered the flaw and released software that took advantage of it to jailbreak iOS devices when you visit its Web site.

A week ago, CNET reported that Apple was preparing a fix, but there was no mention of when Apple would release it.

The update to fix this problem should now be available via iTunes, and we recommended that you install it; however, be sure to back up your iOS devices before applying the updates.

Hackers Release Browser-Based iPhone 4 Jailbreak

The unlocked iPhone 4 is now technically legal and technically possible.

Just days after the U.S. Copyright Office ruled that bypassing a manufacturer's protection mechanisms to allow "handsets to execute software applications" no longer violates federal copyright law, the iPhone Dev Team on Sunday released a jailbreak for the iPhone 4 at JailbreakMe.com.

Unlike previous jailbreaks, which required the device to be connected to a computer to run the update, the latest jailbreak is accomplished completely via mobile Safari loaded on the device. The browser-based software bypass reportedly works on all iOS devices, including iPhones, iPads, and iPods running iOS 4 and iOS 4.01, but it will reportedly not work on devices running the iOS 4.1 beta.

Also, some users report the jailbreak disrupts FaceTime and MMS functionality on the device.

However, as of this writing, demand for the jailbreak is apparently so strong that the site's servers can't keep up, and many visitors report difficulty in getting through.

Jailbreaking allows devices to run apps not approved by the company producing the operating system--such as Apple, the main target of such bypasses. Jailbreaking also allows devices to run on nonauthorized networks.

While the U.S. Copyright Office has declared the software legal, Apple discourages users from loading the bypass, reminding them that doing so will void their device's warranty. "As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably," Apple said in a statement earlier this week.

Apple's Free Bumpers: There's An App For that

As most people in the known universe are aware, Apple recently announced plans to give a free case to any iPhone 4 user who requests one (and to refund the purchase price to those who already bought one--a process that is apparently now under way).

What we didn't know until today was how Apple planned to handle the giveaway. Would you have to fight traffic on a special Web page? Bring your iPhone to an Apple Store? Chant "antennagate" 10 times while standing inside a pentagram?

Turns out Apple went the app route: the iPhone 4 Case Program lets you choose and order your freebie right on your iPhone 4. Neat.

All you do is run the app, sign in with your iTunes account, choose from the available Bumpers and cases, then enter your shipping address. Plan on waiting 3-5 weeks for your case to arrive (not so neat).

A couple of important notes: if you bought your iPhone 4 prior to today (July 23), you have until August 22 to claim your freebie. Buy it from today onward and you have 30 days. The program ends September 30.

What do you think? Was Apple smart to take the app approach? Would you have preferred being able to walk into an Apple Store and walk out with your Bumper?

Best Free Music iPhone App Now Also For iPad

A year ago we included the Shazam app in our list of top thirty iPhone apps. At that time Shazam had been reviewed by a massive 100K users and managed an impressive 3.5 star rating. Impressive because it is difficult to keep that many users happy - much more likely that differences in interests will spread the ratings and result in lower scores!

We are in the process of putting together a new list of the current top 10 apps and decided to check out how those in last years list were doing, today. Impressively, Shazam has been rated by a further 200K users since our report 12 months ago and has maintained its 3.5 star rating.

So if you are a new iPhone owner (or have just joined the Apple family as an iPad owner), we recommend you download this free app and try it out.

For the benefit of those that are not familiar with the app, it identifies the song that are playing on the radio or (more often) a video:

Just point your iphone towards the music source to identify track
If you are keen, the app makes it so that you can even then buy the MP3 from iTunes. But we think its just a really useful way to ID that tune! And obviously we are not alone!

Plants Vs. Zombies 2 Expected In August?

Good news for all you Plants vs. Zombies fans out there. According to a report by slidetoPlay, PopCap has recently been sending out batches of emails stating that August 2, 2010 is a date worth saving.

We don’t know yet whether this marks a planned statement by PopCap or the actual release date of a possible “Plants vs. Zombies 2″ for iPhone and iPad. Additionally, it could point towards the game’s expected port to XBOX 360 Marketplace, which was announced some time ago.

The email sent by PopCap included a PvZ-style graphic, with a note scrawled in zombie handwriting telling us to:

Save the date
August 2, 2010

You can check out the image attached to the email below:

Personally, I’m really hoping for a new game jam-packed with new features, or at the very least, a supermassive update to the game as we know it. However, as of this moment no additional information is known regarding PopCap’s mysterious date.

Plants vs. Zombies is currently available in both an iPhone version, and a fully HD iPad version. If you haven’t already come across the game, then be sure to check it out! Both versions are fantastically addictive and fun to play.

In the meantime, all current fans of the game can do is wait patiently for August 2 to approach, and hope – no, pray – that this little hint points towards a big sequel. My fingers are crossed.

Borders Officially Launches Its eBook Store; App Updated With Retina And Multitasking Support

Today Borders officially launched its online eBook Store, offering a selection of over 1.5 million downloadable titles, including thousands of free titles, which are available in a variety of formats, including ePub, Mobile, and PDF. In addition, the company has also updated the universal version of its Borders eBooks app, which now features Retina display optimization, multitasking support, and in order not to leave iPad users out of the mix, the ability to change bookshelf backgrounds.

With the official launch of the Borders eBook store, the company now makes it possible to obtain and read ebooks on nearly every platform. eBooks can be downloaded and read on your computer, Borders’ own Kobo eReader, Android-based and BlackBerry smartphones, and of course, your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. eBooks downloaded from any source are available for free across all platforms, so you won’t need to shell out money for every version you download.

In unison with the launch of the eBook Store, the Borders eBooks app now features Retina display optimization, making icons and text clear and crisp for iPhone 4 users. It also features fast app switching for those running iOS 4. And finally, iPad owners are able to choose between one of six new bookshelf backgrounds.

Borders is celebrating the launch of its new eBook store by offering five free top-selling books to those who download the free Borders eBooks app between July 9th – 11th. The free books include Frankenstein by Dean Koontz, One Shot by Lee Child, The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, Julia Child’s Kitchen Wisdom, and Master your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels. That’s in addition to the five free books that already come with the app.

The free doesn’t stop there, however. If you are a frequent Borders brick-and-mortar book store visitor, you can whip out your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and show the barista at the Seattle’s Best Coffee cafe within that you have the app installed and receive a free coffee!

That’s a lot of information to take in, so what I recommend doing first is downloading the app, heading to your local Borders that has a Seattle’s Best inside, and drink your free coffee while reading your free eBooks. The rest will fall into place.

Apple's first iAds hit the iPhone

The first day of July brings the first real-world glimpse of Apple's foray into mobile advertising.

As planned, iAds debuted on iOS 4-based devices on Thursday, with the first examples of Apple's program enabling advertisers to present interactive ads directly within iOS apps. Engadget has Dove's entry, starring Major League Baseball's Albert Pujols and Andy Pettitte.

There's also a YouTube video of Nissan Motor's interactive campaign for the new electric Leaf. It's essentially the same as the Leaf ad Steve Jobs demonstrated at its Worldwide Developers Conference last month. As promised, the ads are embedded into iPhone applications, and when clicked, they appear as a window within the app. iAds do not send users to a Web advertisement.

Apple shelled out for Quattro Wireless earlier this year so that it could own and control the way ads are served on its devices and have a say over how analytic data is reported. Last month, Apple updated its developer agreement to exclude nonindependent ad networks from collecting analytic data from iAds. It was widely interpreted as targeting Google's newly acquired AdMob mobile-ad network.

It's been reported that Apple charged $1 million to the first advertisers participating in the program. Together, companies such as Walt Disney, Nissan, Citigroup, Unilever, AT&T, Chanel, General Electric, Liberty Mutual Insurance, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance, Geico, Campbell Soup, Sears Holdings, J.C. Penney, Target, Best Buy, DirecTV, and Turner Broadcasting System have put up $60 million in promised spending through the end of 2010, according to Apple.

Jobs said Apple started the program, which is native to the iOS software developer kit, to help developers make money on free applications in the App Store.

AT&T Officially Out of Stock of iPhone 3G

As if all of the evidence from late last month, including the removal of a "Select" button from the iPhone 3G in Apple's own online store, wasn't enough to convince people that the iPhone 3G is on its last legs, Boy Genius Report points to an apparent internal memo to AT&T retail store employees notifying them that the company is officially out of stock of the device.
June 4, 2010

iPhone 3G 8 GB is Out of Stock

Effective immediately, iPhone 3G 8GB is Out of Stock. Please refer all customers to iPhone 3GS 16 GB and 32 GB models.

FAQ:
Q: When will we receive inventory for iPhone 3G 8GB?
A: At this time, we do not know when more iPhone 3G 8GB will arrive.

Q: Are there any iPhone 3G 8 GB available in COR if my customer can purchase there?
A: Check with your local COR stores to see if they have any inventory available.

The memo appears to be targeted at the selected AT&T authorized retailers permitted to carry the iPhone and refers them to local company-owned retail stores (COR) to check for any remaining stock they might have as the company closes out its inventory of the device.

Apple is widely expected to introduce its next-generation iPhone at its Worldwide Developers Conference next week, with many observers expecting Apple to continue offering the 16 GB iPhone 3GS and slide it down to the entry-level $99 price point currently held by the 8 GB iPhone 3G. Wal-Mart stepped to the front early last week by doing exactly that even before the next-generation iPhone appeared, dropping its price on the entry-level iPhone 3GS to $97 from its previous $197 price point.

HippoRemote Turns iPhone into Multitouch Mouse

HippoRemote Pro is a great alternative for controlling your computer instead of the usual mouse and keyboard. While there are plenty of other options in the App Store that offer this functionality, HippoRemote Pro is by far and above the best.

Mobile-Photo-May-3-2010-10-55-20-PM-200x300What makes HippoRemote Pro unique is a series of profiles that contain shortcuts to key features. For example if you are a Windows 7 user there is one-tap access to the Start menu. Mac OS users can quickly hit the Exposé button. Popular browsers such as Chrome and Safari also have their own shortcuts. This option is also customizable based on the commands that you find yourself mostly using.

The multi-touch trackpad is great to use and is designed well for tasks like browsing or clicking through a media application such as iTunes. A keyboard button fires up the iPhone’s keyboard for typing, which makes it especially useful when searching online.

The Pro version of the app also contains a browser and Twitter access. They may seem a bit out of place here, but it certainly makes it more convenient to quickly check another site or Twitter without leaving the HippoRemote app.

The mouse function felt very natural, and those with multi-touch trackpads will already be familiar with two-finger scrolling and other common commands. There were a few occasions when the response was slightly off, but it was pretty rare. All told Hipporemote Pro offers a very solid experience. One cool feature is the ability to bring up a list of commands such as opening Twitter or closing the application by shaking the phone.

Using this as a mouse replacement is not recommended, as HippoRemote Pro on the iPhone means dealing with a limited amount of screen real estate for functions like right clicking. However, if doing casual browsing or running a PC or Mac as a media center HippoRemote would be an excellent way to control the device.

PC speakers: decent sound, affordable price

The Expressionist Plus sells for less than $100 online.

Not everyone likes the idea of having PC speakers with a separate subwoofer. But the reality is that unless you step up to something like Audio engine's fairly large and pricey A5 bookshelf speakers, you tend to need a 2.1 system to deliver a richer, more bass-laden audio experience.

Altec Lansing's Expressionist Plus FX3021 2.1 system isn't nearly as beefy as the company's current top-of-the-line PC speaker system, the Expressionist Ultra, but it manages to deliver decent sound at an affordable price--less than $100. It also looks good, though the speakers' glossy black finish is a fingerprint magnet.

The system comes with a small, cone-shaped subwoofer with a downward-firing 5.25-inch driver and two small satellite speakers with 2-inch drivers that are mounted on thick wire stands that let you tilt the speakers up at an angle, instead of them pointing straight ahead.

The speaker cables are hard-wired into the satellites and--as is the case with virtually all 2.1 PC speaker speakers--connect to ports in the subwoofer, which is small enough to set on top of a desk but will most likely end up placed on the ground.

If you enjoy crossword puzzles, you are going to love Dictionary.com’s new iPhone app, Agent X Word. The app, which is $2.99 in the App Store, is the ultimate crossword solver. The new app leverages Dictionary.com’s proprietary natural-language technology and semantic search capabilities to provide an actual answer (or up to three hints if you just need a little help).

Agent X Word will provide more than two million hints and answers for over 30,000 crossword puzzles updated daily and claims to understand pop culture and current events. The app will offer definitions and synonyms for answers as well as other features such as recent search history and the ability to email answers to yourself or others. If you aren’t sure you want the answer revealed, the app can provide up to three hints per clue, to help you solve the puzzle yourself.

Dictionary.com’s free iPhone app, which launched in April, has been downloaded more than four million times. The app lets you look up definitions and synonyms from Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com, reaching into a database of more than 275,000 definitions and 80,000 synonyms. The app also features audio pronunciations, similarly spelled words and Word of the Day. The company also recently launched a BlackBerry App and released its API to partners to incorporate into various applications, including e-books.

Quad Camera — Toy Photography For The Kid In You

For the photographer that enjoys the toy camera genre the Quad Camera — Multi Shot Cam by Takayuki Fukatsu is a fun iPhone photography app. This is the 4th release in their series of toy camera apps, based on such toy cameras as the Lomo and Holga. The Quad Camera offers a good time.

quad-camera-5Simplicity is the key to Quad Camera. All you need to do is line up your subject and press the button. Depending on your setting, the iPhone’s built-in camera will take a series of 4 to 8 shots. The settings offer choices such as layout, timer adjustment, and color or black and white modes. There is also a function that allows you to email the developer directly with your suggestions.

Movement is the key to making your photos pop. For best results target either a moving subject or move the camera itself. I found that 4-8 stills of a stationary subject to be much less interesting. When movement was introduced the photos came alive.

The Quad Camera is great to play with and trying to create some interesting work is fun. But if you’re truly into toy cameras and enjoy the light leaks, vignetting and that old school feel you get from a Holga or Lomo you might be in for a slight let down. I wasn’t able to replicate those effects with Quad Camera — Multi Shot Cam but if someone knows how, without the use of Photoshop, it would be interesting to find out how you accomplished it.

Overall I found the Quad Camera to be worth the $1.99 investment. Shooting a variety of shots with it has been enjoyable and trying to push it to create some interesting work is almost contagious. It can’t compete with my other toy cameras and I don’t think that is the objective, but as an iPhone app it has a charm all it’s own.
